Ngaanyatjarra-Giles
Western Australia
Like other small communities in this region most of its older residents used live on the Warburton Mission. In the 1960s some moved to the Docker River settlement across the border with the Northern Territory. The Yarnangu originally used present day Wanarn as a campsite when they travelled on the road developed in the 1970’s to provide easier access between Warburton, Warakurna and Docker River. The Wanarn community is on the dreaming track of the “Kungkarungkalpa” or Seven Sisters.
A 15-bed aged care facility has been established in Wanarn that is managed by Ngaanyatjarra Health Service. It provides a home for a number of residents aged between 61 and 93 years of age requiring both high and lower levels of care. The facility allows frail older people to remain on the Ngaanyatjarra Lands.
