Programs: We use internationally renowned learning programs, including:
• Reggio Emilia philosophy in our state-of-the-art Early Learning Centre
• The Leader in Me Process throughout our Junior, Middle and Senior School
• International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program for Middle School students
• Technology for Learning initiatives including iPads in the Middle School
Our dedicated teaching staff work collaboratively and embrace opportunities for professional development, ensuring that our educational programs remain at the forefront of contemporary education. Each child’s learning needs are met through challenge for those who are talented and additional support for those who have areas of difficulty.
Early Learning Centre (Toddlers Program, 3 & 4 Year Old Kindergarten): At the heart of the Reggio Emilia philosophy is the belief that children are full of curiosity and creativity. The curriculum is flexible and emerges from children’s ideas, thoughts and observations. The Reggio goal is to cultivate within children a life-long passion for learning and exploration. Exploration and awareness of material things around them are fundamental as children learn through the experience of touching, seeing and hearing.
Junior School (Prep to Year 5): Students focus on developing strong foundations in literacy and numeracy skills whilst exploring a range of interesting subjects including Visual and Performing Arts, Inquiry Learning (Humanities, Geography, Science, Economics), Languages Other Than English, Information Technology, Physical Education and Sport, Library sessions and Communication, Civics & Citizenship. Students are introduced to Stephen Covey’s internationally acclaimed The Leader in Me process which promotes social and academic success, culminating in the annual Leadership Day performance when students showcase how they have embedded the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People into their schooling and personal lives.
Middle School (Year 6 to 9): As students begin the challenging transition from primary to secondary schooling, and from childhood to early adulthood, the Oakleigh Grammar Middle School aims to encourage an independence of mind, the discovery of individual interests and a life-long love of learning. The Middle Years Program (MYP) of the International Baccalaureate Organisation (IBO) is used to deliver the prescribed Australian Curriculum. The 9Ways Program for Year 9 students includes the purpose-designed 9Ways Centre for experiential learning where students are given a taste of university-style learning and ownership of a common space to interact with one another both socially and as part of their studies. As part of the 9Ways experience, students complete the Duke of Edinburgh Award which includes community service and outdoor education components and they also partake in various excursions such as City Experience days. Middle School electives include Visual Communication, Drama, Music, Robotics, Wood Technology, Art & Design and Media Studies.
Senior School (Year 10 to 12): Students choose from a range of approximately 20 subject offerings to design their individual VCE programs. These come from areas such as English, Arts and Media, Humanities, Mathematics, Science, Technology, Languages, Health and Physical Education. In addition to these subjects, students may choose to include Vocational Education and Training (VET) off-campus programs among their choices in completing the VCE.
Sport: Students can participate in a wide range of sporting teams as part of interhouse and interschool competitions throughout the year. Sports include Swimming, Volleyball, Basketball, Soccer, Netball, Touch Football, Softball, Hockey, Tennis and Table Tennis. Year 11 students enjoy a Ski Trip to Mt Bulla where they learn to ski and snowboard. Physical Education is a much loved core subject for students from Prep to Year 10 and related VCE subjects are popular choices in Years 11 and 12.
