Kurrambee School

Kurrambee School is a SSP that caters for the educational needs of students with moderate or severe intellectual disabilities, Kindergarten to year 12. Many students have additional needs including mental health, physical, sensory, hearing, vision and behavioural. 43% of the students have Autism.
Kurrambee School currently has 107 students enrolled. Of these families, 32% of students are from single parent families, 53% of students live with both parents, 15% of students live in foster care or supported accommodation with providers or live with relatives other than their parents. Kurrambee School is considered a low SES School and attracts funding to support this fact. Students are drawn from a wide area including as far as Blacktown, Silverdale, North Richmond and Bullaburra.
In 2015-17 period, 29 students will transition from year 12 to post school options. This is a large increase and needs to be considered within the strategic directions.
In previous years, parents have chosen to exempt their children from NAPLAN testing due to their significant intellectual disabilities.
Currently, 16% of students come from LBOTE families. These students are from Arabic, African (not specified), Cantonese, Dinka, Filipino, French, German, Samoan, Spanish, Tongan, Urdu, Vietnamese speaking countries. In 2015, 9% of our students was of Aboriginal descent.
All students have PLPs that are developed in consultation with the student’s families or carers. All students have the opportunities to develop skills in the areas of communication, socialisation, recreation/ leisure and personal management. The students can also be taught skills that they would need in the home, school and community. The students also have goals in the PLP that are from K-6 BOSTES syllabus and the 7-12 BOSTES Life Skills Syllabus.
